JENNIFER YOUNG | BRIDGING THE GENDER GAP

by Team Conscious Carma December 26, 2022
written by Team Conscious Carma

Can you provide an overview of your background?

I am the founder of Jennifer Young Training, Beauty Despite Cancer and The Menopause Plus. I have a first degree in Biology, postgraduate degrees in occupational health and law, numerous therapy qualifications and I am an associate member of the Royal Society of Medicine.

13 years ago my local hospital asked me to work with them to create a skincare line for their cancer patients. That’s what led to the creation of Defiant Beauty, and, later, the creation of accredited qualifications for therapists, through the training school, Jennifer Young Training.

Can you share insight into the Jennifer Young business?

The business has three brands within it. Jennifer Young Training is dedicated to training therapists and healthcare practitioners in specialist touch treatments. We have two strands to our training: the first is oncology touch therapies, enabling therapists to treat cancer patients meaningfully, effectively and safely; the second is our hormone balancing treatments for women in menopause.

Beauty Despite Cancer is our consumer outlet for natural skincare that addresses the side effects of cancer treatment. The Menopause Plus (MPlus) is our consumer outlet for natural products that address the unwanted consequences of menopause.

Can you provide examples and insight where you have seen or experienced gender inequality in the industry?

In my personal experience I find being female to be an advantage. If I have faced challenges resulting from being female, I have not noticed them. I have, perhaps, placed them alongside all of the other day-to-day challenges and just got on and dealt with them.

I worked in almost exclusively male environments from graduating until starting my business, so I suspect I have normalised typically male behaviours, resulting in their going unnoticed.

That said, I have observed, since moving on from my background in science and law, to become part of the wellness industry, that men I meet in all aspects of life assume I am under-educated and that I have a hobby business.  I don’t see this as a challenge but as a source of quiet amusement.

Have you seen evolution in this area in recent years?

I think the biggest area where there is a discrepancy for women is the acknowledgement that we need different support at different life stages – we are not men and equality isn’t always about being given exactly the same things. There are structures and laws in place for women in pregnancy but there has been no support for women in menopause, which can be very disruptive and often affects women as they’re coming into their professional prime.

It’s estimated that one in 10 women have quit their job because of menopause symptoms and that’s to our collective loss. Where I see change beginning to happen is that women are starting to demand more support. We’re talking about menopause more and change will come as a result. More companies are choosing to do more for women because they’re understanding better, but it needs to go further.

Menopause is an unavoidable part of life and whilst many look to the protected characteristics of the Equality Act in the UK for help, the general requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA) are more immediately applicable.

Where do you feel the solutions lie and what can be done to balance the gender gap?

I am a lawyer, with a lawyer’s tendency to rejoice in detail. I will spare everyone the laser focus on language, but it is important to note that the law refers to ‘persons’ when requiring employees to be looked after. I believe the key to reducing a gender gap is to consider all as ‘persons’, gender should not be a factor when taking steps to look after an employee or colleague.

What would your message be to industry leaders and organisations who hold the ability to balance the gender gap?

A truly equitable approach is to do what is best for the person, regardless of gender. Of course, some find that more difficult than others.

Viveda Wellness Village

by Team Conscious Carma July 28, 2022
written by Team Conscious Carma

A writer is always looking for that catchy start, especially when they have decided to give life to their piece and if the place or people, they are writing about have touched their souls in a manner so profound. I was pondering over the thought for days to find that right synchrony, the start…. The storyline for this feature. Here you go…

“Viveda, is a fully Sustainable wellness village plattering traditional healing therapies, imbibed from ancient Ayurveda and combines Yoga for physical well-being in a serene and Green Campus”. -By Freeda Maria, Consulting Editor, Sustainable Tourism.

Our ancient vedic scriptures of Bharat, elucidate the importance of keeping good health through maintaining fitness, “Sharir Madhyam Khalu Dharma Sadhanam” suggesting that the body is a means of achieving the great objectives of a meaningful life, (chaturvidha purushartha).

Viveda’s treatment on healing and wellness philosophy is based on the five elements of nature (Pancha Mahaboothas) comprising Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Space. The philosophy integrates traditional Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy with wellness, fitness and healthy organic cuisine to restore balance and harmony in one’s life.

On my visit and stay at Viveda, and my memorable conversation with Kiran Chavan, The Chairman of Viveda Wellness Village, with his rapt attention to every detail, wearing his passion on his sleeves, fervent and articulate, registered that “Ancient science of health and wellness bestowed by the seer and sages of our country for the welfare of humanity has been epitomized in all its essence at our Viveda”. He goes on to add that, “…health and wellness is a basic human need and contributes to quality of human life experience.”

The place shot to lot of fame when the covid struck, people of Nasik and the surrounding caught in the crowds of the city life, and series of lockdowns and uncertainties, resorted to quiet corners like Viveda (https://vivedawellness.com)

A tranquil nature-based settlement, where the perching of birds, the sounds of the ripples in the water, the chanting in the voices of the air is your companion. Healing begins with silence, and here it befalls and engulfs one in totality. One could take up holistic healing and stay in the 7.5 acres on pristine land in one of the thirty- one handcrafted stone cottages with a wellness centre and 18 treatment rooms.

Viveda with its many facilities was concertedly planned and put together. It begins with the vast expanse, the community, the enclosure. Swaying in the winds that blow past the Sahyadris, from the highlands of Anjaneri, Lord Humanji’s birthplace, is a blessing of sorts for our Trees and shrubs that abound every nook and corner of Viveda. All that one needs is a book, from our Book place (The Library), to sit and indulge in the pages and reflect. An option to lounge by the lake (The Lakeside Deck) is a no miss, or a relaxed walk for a stroll on our walking track.. it’s all therapeutic!

All the pampering that the body needs is taken care of in the Spa. There are various packages and programmes to choose from, personalised to suit every ‘body’ type. The day is not complete at Viveda without an evening by the bonfire, almost always the sky draws a curtain with millions of stars! There is action almost always at the Amphitheatre too.

The most notable feature of Viveda, and like the saying goes, people make places and places come alive with people… Daniel, is as much part of Viveda as the concrete and walls, the tiles and roofs, the trees and shrubs… he binds them all together, with his undaunting passion. The General Manager of the wellness village is a simpleton, who lives and breathes the very ethos of the place, “Wellness is not a luxury it is a necessity, he exclaims, “nature is the healer and sustaining it is vital. Learning to live in appreciation of nature and its resources is giving back, it automatically will restore health”.

EXCLUSIVE HANDCRAFTED COTTAGES

These minimally designed cottages feature walk-in closets, perfectly appointed bathrooms and small garden area that are ideal for a private meal.

SATVIK SPA CUISINE

We serve nutrient-dense vegetarian satvik dishes with organic and unprocessed ingredients sourced from local farmers, fresh to the table.

STONE SWIMMING POOL

Get reminded of the erstwhile royal pools, handcrafted with stones, open to the sky and with secret compartments.

“Viveda in a very short span has seen repeat visitors, and I am not surprised”, marks Tejas Chavan, Director, Viveda Wellness Village. “Our aim was to bring a holistic mind and body practice, an integral science of life dealing with physical, mental and spiritual well-being. We aspire to deliver, with all our hearts, a perfect package of goodness and health, parcelled and curated to take us back to our roots, where everything came free, with fresh air and unadulterated soil”. – Come Rest, Relax and Rejuvenate

Natural Cleaners for a sustainable home

by Team Conscious Carma June 19, 2022
written by Team Conscious Carma

by Gayatri Joshi: Nature has provided us with everything that we need for a clean and healthy living. However, in the name of elite and convenient living, we started moving towards aesthetically appealing products which were also very convenient to use. Our home and body cleaners is one such product line.

Did you know that natural cleaners are available for every type of usage?
Soapnut Detergents for clothes, bioenzyme based solutions as floor cleaners and toilet cleaners, soapnut/shikakai powders for dishwashing and so on…

So what are natural cleaners?
Natural cleaners are cleaners made only from ingredients found in nature. Sounds impossible right? But its true, simple yet effective ingredients like shikakai, soapnuts, citrus peels and essential oils like peppermint and neem essential oils take care of cleaning and disinfection of a regular home. Shikakai and soapnuts have natural saponins that are hypoallergenic and are naturally antibacterial and antifungal. The discharge water after washing with soapnuts is also environment friendly and does not cause any harm to the waterways. The effectiveness of these natural saponins is to be experienced to actually believe in!

How to make natural cleaners at home?
Soapnut and shikakai washing liquids are made by soaking them overnight in lukewarm water and then squeezing out the pulp. Bioenzymes made from citrus peels can be added to this solution to enhance effectiveness and to also elongate shelf life of these products. Bioenzyme is a fermented solution of jaggery, citrus peels and water mixed in the proportion of 1:3:10. Bioenzymes are very easy to make. Just mix the ingredients in the proportion as mentioned in an air tight container. Open the container a couple of times a day  for the first 10 days to let out the gas buildup. Leave it as it is for 3 months thereafter and you will get a fragrant effective cleaning agent. A few drops of essential oils like neem oil and peppermint oils in it will additionally help repel insects and mosquitoes.

Are they as effective as chemical cleaners?
The chemical cleaners do leave your space spotless white in no time, while a natural cleaner might take a little longer to bring in a similar effect. What we need to consider here is not just the cleaning but also the after effects of it. Cleaning your living area by contaminating your environment does not really fit in as wholesome cleaning. The toxic by products let out in the waterways and air find their way back to us again somehow. A balanced cleaning regime is where natural cleaners do a fair job in your home most of the time and keep your environment safe too. Chemical cleaners can be used only when absolutely necessary.
